འཇིགས་མེད་གྲགས་པ
or more commonly known as "Phamtingpa", born 11th cent., one of the Newar students (and possibly also a teacher!!!) of Naropa. He, and his three brothers - all of whom are simply referred to as "Phamtingpa" in Tibetan historical literature, lived in what is now known as Pharping, near Kathmandu. He was one of the first masters whom Marpa met when he travelled via Nepal to India for the first time. Marpa stayed for some time with Phamtingpa and was strongly advised by him to travel onwards to India and meet his own guru Naropa. Further historical material needs to be studied to ascertain which of the "Phamting-brothers" is which... [TSD]
