The wild yak (Bos mutus) is treated as a separate species from the domestic yak (Bos grunniens). Belonging to the genus Bos, Yaks are related to cattle, but may be closer to the bison than other Bos species. The wild Yak is among the largest extant bovid species. Today, wild yaks are found primarily in northern Tibet and western Qinghai, some populations in Ladakh and was recently rediscovered in Humla (Nepal). The primary habitat of wild yaks consists of treeless uplands between 3,000 and 5,500 m (wikipedia). Recently, it has been increasingly confined to the desert steppe for not being disturbed by human activities. The herds are much smaller nowadays. The wild yak, for unknown reasons, will sometimes attack and kill their domesticated counterparts (animaldiversity.org).
