Short Biography[edit]

Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa (1729-1798) was considered to be an emanation of the great pandita Vimalamitra, of King Trisong Detsen, of Longchen Rabjam (13O8-1363), of Ngari Panchen Pema Wangyal (1487-1542), and of many other sages. He was also the immediate reembodiment of Choje Lingpa, also known as Orgyen Rogje Lingpa (1682-1725). [RY]

Rigdzin Jigme Lingpa, Khyentse Ozer (1730-1798), was regarded as an incarnation of both King Trisong Deutsen and Vimalamitra. His most enduring contributions to the Tibetan tradition are his revealed teachings, the Longchen Nyingthig, the diverse body of literature he composed, and the amazing lineage of realized masters that have followed in his wake, which includes Patrul Rinpoche, Do Khyentse Yeshe Dorje and Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo.
Unlike many masters of the Tibetan tradition that went on to compose influential philosophical treatises, Jigme Lingpa did not receive extensive educational training. Neither was he a recognized reincarnation, a tulku. Instead, his great realization came directly through practice. In particular, it came from a series of three visions he had of the great master Longchenpa while in retreat at the Samye Chimpu. In these visions, Jigme Lingpa received the entire transmission of Longchen Rabjam's works, both their words and meanings, and his mind eventually merged completely with that of Longchenpa's.
Following his pivotal retreat at Samye Chimpu, Jigme Lingpa went on to found one of the most influential lineages in the Nyingma tradition. In the centuries since his passing, the inheritors of the Longchen Nyingthig have proven to be some of the greatest scholars, meditation masters and realized yogis in recent history. Many of his literary works, particularly the Treasury of Precious Qualities (yon tan mdzod), continue to be widely studied in Nyingma educational institutions, while his works on tantric practice, such as the famed yeshe lama, are among the most commonly taught practice manuals.

Rigdzin Jikme Lingpa, as a child Jigme Lingpa remembered previous incarnations, his mind was detached from wordly concerns and he was extraordinarily compassionate, intelligent and courageous. At age 6 he entered Palri Monastery, but lived the life of a poor novice with nothing to facilitate learning. His intense zeal for the Dharma, devotion to Guru Rinpoche, and rich inner life filled sustained him and he felt no need to have a master or study intellectual subjects in detail as other students were doing. He learned merely by overhearing the classes of other students or glancing at the texts.
In his twenty-eighth year he started a strict retreat concentrating his meditation on the development and perfection stages. He experienced many visions of Guru Rinpoche, Yeshe Tsogyal, Manjushrimitra and others, each further awakening his inner wisdom. One evening with an unbearable devotion to Guru Rinpoche in his heart, he experienced flying through the sky to the circumnambulation path of the Bodhnath stupa. In the courtyard of the stupa a dakini entrusted him with a wooden casket containing yellow scrolls and crystal beads. Encouraged by another dakini he swallowed these and instantly experienced the full awakening in his mind of all the words and meaning of the Longchen Nyingthik cycle.
Three years later during a retreat at the Chimpu caves the highest realisation of Dzogchen awakened in him through three visionary transmissions of the Longchen Nyingthink teachings from Longchen Rabjam. He kept them secret for seven years, until a clairvoyant disciple beseeched Jigme Lingpa to transmit them. Swiftly the teachings reached every corner of the Nyingma world and became the heart core of meditation instructions for many realised meditators to this day.
Jigme Lingpa spent the remainder of his life in a hermitage at Tsering Jong in southern Tibet attending to a stream of disciples who came to receive the profound nectarlike teachings. His life was full of miracles but he kept his mystical power hidden and his rich life simple. Although he didn't train in traditional disciplines, all his expressions turned into teachings and all his activities were in the service of others.

བྱ་བྲལ་སྒྲུབ་བཙུན་གྱིས་མཐའ་བརྟེན་པ་གྲངས་ཀྱིས་མི་ལངས་ཤིང༌། ཁམས་ཕྱོགས་རྙིང་མའི་བླ་སྤྲུལ་ཕལ་ཆེར་གྱིས་ཀྱང་ཞབས་ལ་གཏུགས། ཁྱད་པར་ནང་ཐུགས་ཀྱི་སྲས་གཅིག་པུ་ལྷ་སྲས་མུ་རུབ་བཙད་པོའི་རྣམ་འཕྲུལ་གྲུབ་དབང་འཇིགས་མེད་ཕྲིན་ལས་འོད་ཟེར༑ བྱང་སེམས་ཆེན་པོ་འཇིགས་མེད་རྒྱལ་བའི་མྱུ་གུ། མོན་མཁས་གྲུབ་འཇིགས་མེད་ཀུན་གྲོལ་སོགས་ཀྱི་ཕྲིན་ལས་ལ་བརྟེན་ལྷོ་ཕྱོགས་རྒྱ་གར་གྱི་ས་མཚམས་དང༌། ཤར་ཕྱོགས་རྒྱ་སོག་གི་བར་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྣང་བས་ཁྱབ་པའི་ཕྲིན་ལས་ནི་ཕྱི་དུས་འདིར་སུས་ཀྱང་འགྲན་ཟླར་མ་གྱུར་པ་མ་ཟད། རྗེ་ཉིད་ཀྱིས་ཁོ་བོས་དབེན་པའི་རིར་ལོ་བདུན་བྱང་ཆུབ་ཀྱི་སེམས་རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་བསྒོམས་པས་བསྟན་པ་དར་རྒྱས་སུ་འབྱུང་བར་ཞལ་གྱིས་བཞེས་པ་ལྟར། དེང་སང་ཡང་སྙིང་ཐིག་གི་སྨིན་གྲོལ་ཉམས་ལེན་ཕྱོགས་ཐམས་ཅད་དུ་མ་ཁྱབ་པ་མེད་པ་ལྟ་བུས་ཇེ་དར་དུ་འགྲོ་བར་སྣང་བས་ལུང་བསྟན་གྱི་བདེན་དོན་མངོན་དུ་གྱུར། དེ་ལྟ་བུའི་འཁོར་ལོ་གསུམ་གྱི་མཛད་པ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་ནས་དགུང་ལོ་བདུན་ཅུར་སོན་པ་ས་རྟ་དབྱུག་པ་ཟླ་བའི་ཚེས་གསུམ་ལ་རང་གནས་ཚེ་རིང་ལྗོངས་ཀྱི་ཡང་དབེན་རྣམ་གྲོལ་ཡང་རྩེར་པདྨ་འོད་ཀྱི་ཞིང་ཁམས་ཆེན་པོར་རྟགས་དང་ཆོ་འཕྲུལ་མངོན་པར་འདུ་མཛད་དེ་གཤེགས་པ་ན། སྔ་ཚུད་ནས་ཞལ་ཆེམས་རྡོ་རྗེའི་ཚིག་ངོ་མཚར་ཅན་ཞིབ་མོ་བསྩལ་བ་ལྟར་རྗེས་ཀྱི་བྱ་བ་རྣམས་དབོན་འོད་ཟེར་ཕྲིན་ལས་སོགས་ཀྱིས་ཐུགས་དགོངས་རྫོགས་པའི་བྱ་བ་རྒྱ་ཆེན་པོ་མཐར་ཕྱིན་པར་མཛད་དོ། །བདུད་འཇོམས་འཇིགས་བྲལ་ཡེ་ཤེས་རྡོ་རྗེས་གསུངས་སོ།།


ཤེས་བྱ་ཀུན་མཁྱེན་འགྲོ་ལ་རྗེས་བརྩེའི་གཏེར། །
You who know all that’s knowable, source of compassion for all beings,
དྲི་མེད་འོད་ཟེར་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་ཐུགས་གཏེར་མཛོད། །
The emanation of Drime Özer (Longchenpa) and heir to a treasury of mind-termas;
འོད་གསལ་ཀློང་ཆེན་ནམ་མཁའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ། །
Sky-like yogi of the luminescent, vast expansive
འཇིག་མེད་གླིང་པའི་ཞབས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས།། །།
