Palpung Monastery

Palpung (dpal spung). The monastery in East Tibet which is the main seat of the Situ Rinpoches in Tibet, and one of the most important Karma Kagyu monasteries. Its construction was begun in 1727 under the guidance of the 8th Tai Situpa Chökyi Jungne. Prior to that, several Situ Rinpoches resided at Lho Karma Gon, another important Karma Kagyu monastery in Eastern Tibet, established by the 1st Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa. [RY/TSD]
