Freda Houlston Bedi (1911-1977) was ordained by the 16th Karmapa at age 55. Her dharma name was Karma Tsultrim Khechog Palmo, and she was known as Sister Palmo. This accomplished woman, a former Indian parliamentarian (Congress Party) and mother of Indian film star, Kabir Bedi, was also a sponsor and patron of Tibetan refugees including Akong Rinpoche and Trungpa Rinpoche.
She is remembered by her daughter, Sheila Fugard, in Lady of Realization (Cape Town: Maitri Publications, 1984 (2nd edition) ) and was responsible for having had translated into English many tibetan texts from the karma kagyu tradition, and too the life story of the 8th-century saint, Gelongma Palmo (Bhikshuni Srimati), who introduced the practice of nyungne.
Sister Palmo was ordained as a novice in 1966 by the 16 th Karmapa, the first Western woman ever to formally enter the Tibetan sangha. She then went on, in 1972, to take full bhikshuni vows in the Chinese Mahayana tradition.

-Thomas Roth is a former Radio Operator (the only "proper" profession he ever learned) and became a monk in 1981. He took refuge in 1977 from Lama Gendun Rinpoche and has been a student of Ven. Tenga Rinpoche since 1979. In 1988 he returned his ordination to Lama Gendun Rinpoche and has been a lay-person ever since. He never intended to be a "translator" as such and actually only learned some Tibetan because in the late 70's and early 80's there were so few translators around, that it was at times difficult to find one when needed. Still a bit at odds with being called a translator by some, he interprets mainly for H.E. Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and Ven. Tenga Rinpoche during their annual spring courses in Kathmandu and their summer courses in Belgium. Apart from travelling with these two masters, he spends most of his time in their monastery in Kathmandu/Nepal. His main interest, apart from anything Mahamudra, is Tibetan history, particularly the history of the various Kagyu lineages.
