Hi regarding the Palpung Khyentse Rinpoche page you created sometime back. I understand (from Karma Tinley Rinpoche whom I talked to about this almost 40 years ago) that when the previous Palpung Beru Khyentse passed away there was one Beru Khyentse tulku (born in Bhutan) recognized by Palpung monastery - and another Beru Khyentse tulku (born in Nyethang, Central Tibet in 1947) recognized by HH the 16th Karmapa. The Bhutanese incarnation, recognized by Palpung monastery, apparently inherited all the belongings of the previous tulku and later returned to Bhutan. He doesn't seem to have done much after that - and eventually passed away. The other one who was recognized by HH the 16th Karmapa was taken to Nangchen and put in the care of the leaders of the 'Brong-sar clan who had built a new monastery there for Karmapa - so he is sometimes also called 'Brong-sar or Bongsar Khyentse. (This is the one who came to India, established a monastery and retreat centre at Mainpat, built the temple in Bodhgaya, and one near Boudha.) Some say there was some disagreement between Tsurphu and Palpung which lead to these two tulkus - but that may be idle gossip.
So Jamyang Khyentse (Shenpen) Ozer was the first Palpung / Beru Khyentse - one of the principal incarnations of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo. After the first Beru Khyentse passed away there were two different tulkus recognized. Perhaps this clears things up a little. I don't know if Palpung monastery or Situ Rinpoche have subsequently recognized a tulku of the previous (Bhutanese) tulku who passed away. That may be why there is the "3rd" Beru Khyentse you mention.

Today I asked a senior Bhutanese scholar and historian, Dasho Sangay Dorje - who is also from Bumthang, about the 2nd Palpung Khyentse (the Bhutanese one). He told me that the tulku was born into a wealthy family with royal connections. When he returned to Bhutan for a time he was in charge of Nyima Lung monastery in Bumthang but quite soon left and got married, after which my informant tells me "he led a life which had nothing to do with religion" and died at an early age.
