The Shel gong shel phreng does not distinguish types and describes sga tig as growing in meadows of rocky, mountain regions, forming numerous roots with thin rootlets, pink flowers in groups on red, upright stalks and hairy leaves in a basal rosette. mKhyen rab Nor bu distinguishes a black type, sga tig nag po, with dark, pink flowers, and a brown type, sga tig smug po (Kletter 2001).
