From arabic al-qualy, ashes of saltwort. Any strongly basic substance, such as a hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal (e.g., sodium, potassium). Alkaline soils are usually clays with a pH above 8,5. Alkaline or soda lakes are caracterized by a high pH of 9-12 and a high concentration of carbonate salts. The tibetan plateau counts some 250 alkaline lakes, of which lake Zabuye in the Kailash region became the principal source for Lithium in China (mindat.org, wikipedia).
