(sman) Nephrite (dGa' ba'i rDo rje 1998) Jade (Das 1905)
Synonyms : g.yang ti, g.yang spru'u (White jade) (Das 1905)

Nephrite is one of the two minerals which compose Jade, the other being Jadeite (dzus). The latter is more rare and gives the most valued of all Jades, the emerald-green and translucent 'Imperial Jade'.
Nephrite (g.yang tri), now called Tremolite, is white when pure (g.yang tri dkar po), but mostly green due to iron contents, or yellow to brown. Employed already since the Chinese Neolithic to make choppers and blades due to their toughness and resistance to fracture, Nephrite jade became later in the Chinese culture as valued as gold and diamonds elsewhere.
dGa' ba'i rDo rje (1998) describes Nephrite jade (g.yang tri) as an affiliate under Jasper (khyung skyugs), and Jadeite jade (dzus) as an affiliate under Emerald (ma rgad).
