The synonym byi thur is also translated as hedgehog. dGa' ba'i rDo rje (1995) shows the porcupine quills under the name byi thur, and mentions the hedgehog within the notice of the porcupine (gzugs mo) under the name rgang.
The rigid quills are modified hairs, coated with keratin plates (recalling the solid rhinoceros horns, bse ru growing in keratinized layers from specialized skin cells, or the keratin body coverings of pangolins, na gi).
