Chogle Namgyal (1306-1386) was one of the primary disciples of Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen. He first traveled to the Great Mountain Retreat at Jonang as a young man in order to study the zhentong (gzhan stong) system that was being taught by Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen. When he arrived at Jomonang, Chogle met Dolpopa circumambulating the Great Stupa, and asked the master if he would teach him zhentong. Dolpopa then instructed Chogle Namgyal on Zhentong Madhyamaka in his private residence for a week. Sometime later, Chogle returned to Jonang in order to request and receive the Kalachakra empowerment and guidance instructions on the 6-fold vajrayoga ("six yogas") from Dolpopa. After these transmission experiences, Chogle continued to live in retreat in his meditation cave at Jonang, or at Kunpang Thukje Tsondru's Se Karchung cave. He also presided as the ritual master at the acting Jonang monastery in Ngamring. After the death of Lotsawa Lodro Pal, Dolpopa appointed Chogle Namgyal as the 6th throne-holder of Jonang in the year 1354. He served as the throne-holder of Jonang for 6 years.
