The {dgongs pa grub pa'i rgyud}. says, "One should know that all mantras are divided into three classes, gnostic mantras which are the essence of skillful means, dh ra i^s which are the essence of discriminative awareness, and secret mantras which are the non- dual pristine cognition." Thus dh ra i^s originate from the teachings of the transcendent perfection of discriminative awareness, gnostic mantras from the kriy tantra and secret mantras from the mah yoga, anuyoga and atiyoga. see also under mantra and gnostic mantra; by unity of prajna/ emptiness and upaya/ great compassion there is the wisdom of great bliss that protets the mind from mental characteristics, it is secretly practiced, not to be seen or realized by those who are not vessels] [IW]
