The 100 and some native species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are a relict of mass extinctions in the Quaternary, when uplift of the Himalayas transformed the prevailing low-altitude tropical or subtropical conditions to the present cold, arid, high-altitude climate. Members of the subfamily Schizothoracinae (naked carp or snow trout) are an evolutionary offshoot of the Cyprinidae. Several genera are present in Tibet.
Schizopygopsis younghusbandi is an endemic species found only in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River, and is one of the most important commercial fishes in this area.
Oxygymnocypris stewartii is an endemic occuring in the Yarlung Tsangpo River and its tributaries at altitudes above 3,600 m in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Both are nowadays heavily used as a food fish and overfished (wikipedia, fishbase). Many of the local species decline seriously because of habitat loss, overfishing and introduced species, and are now listed as vulnerable on China's Red List.
