From arabic al-qualy, ashes of saltwort. Any strongly basic substance, such as a hydroxide or carbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal (e.g., sodium, potassium). Alkaline soils are usually clays with a pH above 8,5. Alkaline or soda lakes are caracterized by a high pH of 9-12 and a high concentration of carbonate salts.
