A number of authors identify rgya skyegs with lac-producing insects like Kerria lacca, others with the raw lac itself or the host plants. The image in the Medical Thangkas recalls sticklac, the raw product after lac insects have colonized the branches of the host trees and secreted the resinous pigment. The coated branches of the host trees are cut and harvested as sticklac.
