It is one of the five image- emanations of [[Avalokitesvara]] which originated miraculously from the milk lake of the [[Dakini Land of Karsha]] ([[gar shwa]], Lahaul, in northern India).  The monastery also housed the white conch and the cauldron of Naropa.
