Discussion

non-concurrent formation. Formations that are not mental factors. In the Kashmiri Vaibhasika school, there are fourteen non-concurrent formations, including attainment, non-attainment, same class, conception-free beings, conception-free absorption, absorption of cessation, vitality, the four characteristics of composites (arising, staying, aging and destruction), letters, names and words, and posits that these have substantial existence.

The Sutra School characterizes non-concurrent formations as "things that are neither matter nor mind," which includes individuals, time, and so forth, and posits that these have only labeled existence.

The Tibetan is short for sems dang mtshungs par mi ldan pa'i 'du byed, or "formations that are not concurrent with mind." Because they are in the aggregate of formation, they are called formations. Because they are not mental factors and hence are not concurrent with mind, they are called non-concurrent.

This term is synonymous with non-mental formation. DKC
