Nine regions of Tibet and Kham: The Regions of Jewel Light (rin chen 'od kyi gling) are the three upper districts (stod khams gsum) between the slate and snow mountains which are governed by elephants and deer. The Regions of Four Sogdian Areas (ru bzhi sog pa'i gling) are the three middle districts (bar khams gsum) between rock and meadow mountains which are governed by rock demons and monkeys. The Regions of Peacocks Below (rma bya 'og gling) are the three lower districts (smad khams gsum) between the jungles and forests which are governed by birds and rakshasas. At this time there were no human beings. But here, "the center of the nine regions" is defined as being Samye in the center surrounded by the four cardinal and four intermediate directions of Tibet and Kham, altogether nine. This is the view of Jamyang Khyentse as has been told by Jamdrak [RY]
