The domestication of the yak mirrors the human population development on the Tibetan Plateau, colonized since about 30 000 years Befor Present, with human population expansions during the early Neolithic (10,000–7,000 yr BP) and late Holocene (4,000–3,000 yr BP). Domestication is estimated about 7 300 yr BPt by nomadic herders (the first findings of settlements are not older than 5 200 yr BP), with a strong increase of its population 3 600 yr BP (which co-incides with the beginning of barley culture). The same estimation states a serious decline of the wild yak population 500 years ago.
