The Shel gong shel phreng distinguishes two superior and two inferior types : hong len mchog grows in SW Tibet, both are very bitter, but differ in their roots. One has dark red roots, the other soft, pale roots. hong len dman pa is subdivided in a male variety, pho, growing in screes and having dark, shiny leaves and dark flowers, and a female variety, mo, growing in moist meadows and having white flowers and thick, wrinkled leaves. The two main genera, Picrorhiza and Lagotis, are quite similar and grow in the same areas (Kletter 2001)
