From the ancient Persian lazhward, meaning "blue", as well as Lapis lazuli. Gave the sanskrit name rājāvarta for Lapis lazuli, or mthing in tibetan, as well as the western azur.
Azurite (Hydrous copper carbonate) is a blue, vitreous, secondary copper mineral frequently found in the oxidized zones of Cu-bearing ore deposits, often together with malachite. A number of mining sites in western and central Tibet (mindat.org).
