Deshin Shegpa, de bzhin gshegs pa, (1384-1415). Like several of his predecessors, he travelled to China and became one of the Gurus of the Chinese emperors. The then emperor Yung-Lo was a highly developed practitioner and was able to perceive the subtle black crown that is present over each Karmapas head. He had a material replica made and presented it to Deshin Shegpa. Since then the Karmapas perform the famous "Black Crown Ceremony".
