lit. hidden land; regions or sanctuaries prophesied, mostly by Guru Padmasambhava, as save havens for the practice of dharma in times of conflict. The Himalayan region bordering on Tibet contains a variety of such places and there are varying lists of them, mostly found in the treasure or gter ma literature of the Nyingmapa school. [RY/TSD]
