The Medical Thangkas show a toad like species without tail, whereas Jam-dpal's illustration has a salamander-like animal. Jam-dpal describes da byid under the heading gangs sbal, for which he gives it as synonym. Quoting different sources, he discriminates a male pho sbal or da byid living in the snowy heights. And a female form which has the aspect of a toad, living down at the lakes. Of the da byid, it is in particular the purple or brown one which is considered superiour. da byid smug po is identified with Western Chinese mountain salamander, Batrachuperus pinchonii, of brown to olive colour.
