Padma Rigdzin (padma rig 'dzin) was the first Dzogchen Rinpoche. He studied with many renowned teachers, including the great fifth Dalai Lama and Karma Chakme, and attained mastery of both the Mahamudra and Dzogchen teachings. In 1684, he established Dzogchen Monastery in Eastern Tibet, which eventually became one of the six main monasteries of the Nyingma tradition.
