1) Rājagṛha. The ancient city of Rājagṛha (Pāli: Rājagaha), along with its local environs such as Mt. Vulture’s Peak, renowned as the location of many of the Buddha’s discourses, is today the small city of Rajgir in the Indian state of Bihar. Clearly its modern name derives directly from its ancient moniker. It is probably one of the oldest surviving and continuously inhabited cities in India, dating back to at least around 1000 BC. Today it has a population of around 42,000. It was the first capital of the kingdom of Magadha, a state that would eventually evolve into the Mauryan Empire (323-184 BC).
