Katokpa Dampa Deshek (dam pa bde gshegs shes rab seng+ge, 1122–1192) was a Khampa master who became one of the most encyclopedic scholar-practitioners of twelfth-century Tibet and key founding figure of the Katok Nyingma tradition. Trained across the full range of Tibetan Buddhist traditions — receiving Prajñāpāramitā, Madhyamaka, Vinaya, and Abhidharma instruction alongside tantric transmissions in Cakrasaṃvara, Hevajra, Kālacakra, and Dzogchen — he synthesized sūtra and tantra in his teaching and writing with remarkable breadth. His compositions, collected in nineteen volumes, included commentarial works on the Abhisamayālaṃkāra, Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, Abhidharmakośa, and Bodhicaryāvatāra, as well as systematic treatises on the Nine Vehicles and Dzogchen.
He received teachings from some of the greatest masters of the Kadam, Kagyu, Sakya, and Nyingma traditions, such as Sonam Tsemo (bsod nams rtse mo 1142-1182), Bari Lotsāwa Rinchen Drak (ba ri lo tsA ba rin chen grags, 1040-1112), Sengge Zangpo (seng+ge bzang po), a noted Kadam lama at Reting (rwa sgreng), Dusum Khyenpa (karma pa 01 dus gsum mkhyen pa, 1110-1193), and many others. Some records show that he was the younger brother or cousin of the great Phag mo gru pa.
In 1159, he founded Katok Monastery in Kham, which became a major center for the study of both exoteric philosophy and Nyingma tantric practice. His curriculum there encompassed not only the classical Indian śāstras but also Kadam Lamrim, Sakya Lamdre, and Kagyu Mahāmudrā, reflecting an approach to Buddhist philosophy that was at once rigorous, cross-traditional, and deeply rooted in practice. He is regarded as a founding figure of the Katok Nyingma tradition and one of the great synthesizers of Tibetan philosophical and contemplative learning of his era. Source: Treasury of Lives
