snam sbyar

One of a Buddhist monk's three robes

The outer robe worn by fully ordained monks on formal occasions, including teachings and begging for alms, is fashioned of patches, their number indicative of the monastic order to which they belong‌. See, e.g., Zhang Yisun et al (1985): 1594–1595.
