The Shel gong treats bil ba under the heading of ka bed, distinguishing a big, male type and a small, female type. Gourds, fruits of the cucumber family, are the male or big type of ka bed. bil ba, the fruit of the Bael tree, is the small or female type of ka bed, also called ku ba chung. They are similar in colour, shape and hardness of the epicarp, but different in many other aspects.
'Jam dpal has two successif notices, ka bed or ku ba chen po, and bil ba or ku ba chung ba.
