"According to the concealed teachings on passion, when following what has been taught in the Ocean of Magical Display and elsewhere, the nadi-wheels are the syllable E and the bindhus are the syllable VAM and thus these apply to the liberation of the upper gate. Moreover, the lotus of the consort is E and the lord's vajra is VAM, and thus these apply to the secret lower gate." The Light of Wisdom, Vol. 1, pgs. 29-30.

"The general meaning according to the development stage is, for instance, to explain the outer or general meaning of the development stage by teaching the people who are unsuited for the concealed teachings on passion to visualize the subtle emblems of the five families at the tip of one's "superficial nose" with statements such as:

"Always comtemplate at the tip of your nose,
The precious gems of five colors."

Moreover, this includes all which is connected to the development stage, such as visualizing the basis, the celestial palace; and the based, the deities. Since that training is common to both the development and completion stages, it is the general meaning.

The hidden meaning. Teaching plainly the rituals for the action seal (karmamudra) and union, the male and female yoga practitioners engagement in the passion of intercourse, is unseemly and so inappropriate to express in verse.
