The illustrations in the Medical Thangkas don't distinguish between sbal pa and da byid, they show toad-like species without tail. Drungtso translates da byid as 'male white snow frog', giving the scientific name Batrachuperus pinchonii, Mountain salamander.
Jam-dpal's illustration in the notice gangs sbal - where he gives da byid as a synonym - depicts a salamander-like animal. Quoting different sources, he discriminates between a male pho sbal and a female mo sbal. According to colours, they are of different qualities, the purple or brown one considered superiour. da byid smug po is identified with Western Chinese mountain salamander, Batrachuperus pinchonii, of brown to olive colour (Yeshi 2017). B. tibetanus is dark yellow.
gangs sbal / da byid / pho sbal seem to indicate salamanders, wheras mo sbal / sbal pa in the medicinal context indicate the toad-groupe of frogs. Toad is a common name for certain frogs, associated with drier, rougher skin, stouter body, shorter legs and more terrestrial habitats. Thus sbal pa and da byid would covers the 2 main groups of the 3 which make up the amphibians : frogs and salamanders.
