The explanations beneath the illustration in the Medical Thankas refers to an indian legend : 'Those precious stones after Indra's praying, thrown into the sea and swallowed by the toad, drunk by the elephant, geese, vulture, snake, peacock, bear, and pigeon (becoming treating stones)'. The vedic legend has it that Indra once cast the five precious minerals: gold, silver, coral, pearl, and either sapphire or turquoise, into the great ocean. These were eventually consumed by various animals, which then formed bezoars within their bodies. They have different colors and potencies based on the animal they originate from. The superior, mediocre, and inferior forms of these stones are reputed to respectively cure seven, five, or three patients who have been poisoned.
The narratives around dbang ril (calculi), gi wang (bezoar) and even mu tig (pearl) overlap, as do the modern explanations about their formation. gi wang (bezoar) is depicted in the Medical Thangkas as rather amorphous masses, whereas dbang ril (calculi) are depicted as round stones.
An enterolith is a mineral concretion or calculus formed in the gastrointestinal system. It may form around a nidus, a small foreign object, similar to the creation of a pearl. Enteroliths are mostly found in the intestines of animals (mostly ruminants) and humans, and may be composed of inorganic or organic constituents. Equine enteroliths are typically smoothly spherical or tetrahedral, consist mostly of the mineral struvite (ammonium magnesium phosphate), and have concentric rings of mineral precipitated around a nidus. See also toadstone or snakestone on wikipedia.
An enterolith is not to be confused with a gastrolith. These are pebbles or gravels which helps digestion in animals lacking suitable grinding teeth. Gastroliths are common among crocodiles, alligators, herbivorous birds, seals and sea lions. Domestic fowl require access to grit. Apparent microgastroliths have also been found in frogs and tadpoles (wikipedia). But the vedic legend certainly did not make these distinction.
