The Shel gong shel phreng distinguishes a black type, growing in the shade of bushes and developping thin brown stems with small leaves, and a white type, growing in the sun and at lower altitudes with small, hairy leaves. Others distinguish superior and inferior types, the latter attributed to the genus Adenophora. The genus Codonopsis is subdivided into Pseudocodonopsis with spreading petals, and Eucodonopsis with more or less campanulate flowers. Apart from C. convolvulacea, all species of klu bdud rdo rje belong to the Eucodonopsis. But the name has a large meaning and includes other genera with bell-shaped flowers (Kletter 2001) See snyi ba for species of the Pseudocodonopsis groupe.
