One method describes making cinnabar ash (mtshal thal), which involves the extraction of mercury from cinnabar. Here, powdered cinnabar is burned in a sealed clay pot by heating it from below and cooling it from above; the condensed liquid mercury is collected from the top of the pot and the ash at the bottom is used in medicine. (Gerke 2021)
In the context of Precious Pills, " tsotel (btso thal) is a compound of processed mercury-sulphide, eight metals, and eight rock components, which are all processed over several weeks with numerous plants and other ingredients, and eventually burnt to ash". It is added in order to amplify the potency of the ingredients. When compounded with processed mercury, Precious Pills "cure all diseases that are difficult to heal". And taken by healthy individuals, these compounded Precious Pills constitute a "rejuvenating" remedy (bcud len). (Gehrke 2013). See rin chen ril bu.
