mthe ldum has 4 types. brag mtshe grows on rocky mountains, it is broad as a wheat straw. spang mtshe grows on meadows and gravel. Of it's 2 forms, lug mtshe is needle-shaped and ra mtshe is broad. chu mtshe has a more regular, triangular form and grows in moist places (Dawa 1999)
chu mtshe is identified with horsetails which have round, jointed and ridged stems. But is described as triangular, which is rather a characteristic of sedges, gla sgang.
