Dharamsala [IW]

Tibetan nickname for Dharamshala (deriving from the Sanskrit धर्मशाला, Dharmaśālā, "spiritual sanctuary"), which is also commonly spelled Dharamsala, and sometimes Dharmshala or Dharmsala, referring to the town located in the Kangra District of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, which has been the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile and His Holiness the Dalai Lama since 1959. This is an abbreviated form of dha ram sa la or rda ram sa la. Erick Tsiknopoulos
