The Threefold Knowledge, or three kinds of (extraordinary) knowledge or awareness (rig pa gsum, here gsum rig), are as follows: 1) knowledge of past lives (sngon gyi gnas shes pa), 2) knowledge of death, transmigration and rebirth (‘chi ‘pho ba dang skye ba shes pa), and 3) knowledge of the exhaustion of defilement (zag pa zad pa shes pa). Alternatively, they are 1) knowledge of recollecting previous lifetimes (sngon gyi gnas rjes su dran pa shes pa), 2) knowledge of the divine eye, or unlimited, clairvoyant vision (lha’i mig gi shes pa) and 3) knowledge of the exhaustion of defilement (zag pa zad pa’i shes pa). These three types of knowledge are the same as three (often the last three, depending on the list order) clairvoyant or supranormal abilities of the Six Clairvoyances (mngon par shes pa drug), and their names are also almost the same (including ‘knowledge’ or ‘cognition’, shes pa); as well as the last three strengths or powers of the Ten Strengths (stobs bcu), namely, 8) पूर्वनिवासानुस्मृतिज्ञानबलम् ॥ cyutyutpattijñānabalam'chi 'pho ba dang skye ba mkhyen pa'i stobs ॥ āśravakṣayabalamzag pa zad pa mkhyen pa'i stobs ॥
