Preferred habitats are cool, temperate grasslands, steppes, and savannahs, but horses also occupy semi-deserts, swamps, marshes, and woodlands. Their closest relatives, Przewalski's wild horses were thought to no longer exist in the wild. Current conservation efforts in Przewalski's wild horses include legal protection of the species in Mongolia (animaldiversity.org).
