| English Definition | [ānanda]; one of the twelve close disciples of Buddha [ṡakyamuni] known for his knowledge of scriptures. He was second of the seven hierarchs (see {ston pa'i gtad rabs bdun}) after the passing away of Buddha and recited by heart the [sūtrapitaka] during the first council held at [rājagṛha]. He was also one of the main disciples who attended Buddha's teachings on the four tantras of medicine. |
