The Shel gong shel phreng has 3 types of a krong : rtswa a krong, mkhan pa a krong and shing a krong. The physician mKhyen rab nor bu adds phur mong a krong. rtswa a krong is a cushion like plant with small, white flowers, grass like leaves and a very hard root (Kletter 2001).
rtswa a krong corresponds to alpine, cushion-like Caryophyllaceae spp, 'khan a krong to Ajania of the Asteraceae, and shing a krong is identified with Buddleija spp.
But the Shel gong shel phreng has 'khan a krong not only under the entry a krong, but also under the entry 'khan pa : 'khan dkar (one of the 4 types of 'khan pa) is also called 'khan a krong. Here the name denotes an Artemisia sp. A further point of cross-confusion is the differing orthography ('khan pa and mkhan pa) applied by different authors : 'khan/mkhan a krong can refer to Ajania spp (Asteracea with Chrysanthemum like leaves), but is also a synonym of mkhan dkar, the white type of mkhan pa, a group of Artemisia spp. Similarly, phur mong a krong is a synonym of phur dkar, the white type of phur mong, another group of Artemisia spp.
