Skt. अवैवर्तिकभूमि ''avaivartika-bhūmi''. 1) the stage of non-retrogression, the level of non-retrogression, the ground of non-retrogression; 2) the stage of irreversibility, the level of irreversibility, the ground of irreversibility; 3) the stage of non-return, the level of non-return, the ground of non-return; 4) the stage of non-regression, the level of non-regression, the ground of non-regression. Usually equated with the 8th Bodhisattva Level, 'Unswerving', 'Immovable' or 'Unshakeable' (Skt. ''acala'', Tib. [[mi g.yo ba]]), this is the state in which a bodhisattva will never fall back into cyclic existence or Saṃsāra as an ordinary sentient being. According to the 2nd century ''Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra'' (chapter VII), “There are two kinds of Bodhisattvas, with regression (''vaivartika'') or without regression (''avaivartika'') as is the case for the Arhats who are susceptible of falling back (''parihāṇa-dharman'') or not susceptible of falling back (''aparihāṇa-dharman''). The non-regressing Bodhisattvas are called the true Bodhisattvas for they are it truly; the others, the Bodhisattvas susceptible of falling back, are called Bodhisattva by extension. In the same way, those who have found the fourfold path are called the true assembly (''saṃgha'') for they are really it; the others, those who have not found the path, are called assembly by extension”.
