'Jam-dpal describes 2 types in the Eye Ornament, a forest lizard or forest salamander (nags rtsangs sam nags sbal) similar to a gangs sbal (salamander), and a valley lizard (klung rtsangs). The illustrations in the Medical Thangkas and the Eye Ornament depict lizards.
rtsangs pa is identified with the Himalayan Agama, having a range from Southern Pamir, Afghanistan, Karakoram mountains, Ladakh and Himalaya up to Tibet; elevation 1000 – 3500 m.
