One of the major advantages of the [http://www.unicode.org/ Unicode] is platform independence. If an Operating System supports Unicode character encoding, a [[Tibetan Input Method]] and is able to display complex scripts, all applications should be able to edit and display Tibetan text.

Legacy Editors were created before the [[Tibetan Unicode]] standard existed. During those times, proprietary font formats were the only way to edit texts in Tibetan fonts. Unfortunately a chaotic number of variants of proprietary encoding schemes for [[Tibetan Fonts]] was created in the early days of Tibetan text processing. A number of [[Font Conversion Programs]] address this problem.
