Pratyāhara is essentially a meditative absorption (ting nge 'dzin) that is free from mental activity. In particular the connection is cut between the subject and object of the normal five senses of the eye and so forth, and the five objects of form, and so on. Like several rdzog chen techniques, this practice is ideally performed in total darkness. [TSD]
