kelāyati
Entry 5174, Page 192, Col. 1
(kelAyati, kelAyati)
kelāyati¦ (or, once, kelay°; = Pali keḷāyati, not well defined PTSD; prob. not connected with Skt. keli, but origin obscure), (1) cleans up, puts in order: so perhaps gdve. kelāyitavyam Mvy 2591 (Jap. to be cleaned; this seems to be the mg. of one Tib. rendering, bstsal ba; occurs in list of words headed nisṛjā-paryāyāḥ, synonyms for nisṛjā, q.v.); note that Pkt. kelāiya is said to mean [Page192-b+ 71] cleaned (Sheth); also Mmk 52.14 su-parāmṛṣṭaṃ su-ke- lāyitaṃ su-śobhitaṃ pṛthivīpradeśaṃ kṛtvā gomayena leptavyaḥ; (2) tends, keeps up, looks after (fields): Divy 631.5 anye sattvā(ḥ) śālikṣetrāṇi kelāyanti gopāyanti vāpayanti vā; (3) tends, cares for (persons): AsP 253.13 (te putrās tāṃ mātaraṃ…) su-kelāyitāṃ kelāyeyuḥ; LV 100.9 (kā…samarthā) bodhisattvaṃ gopāyituṃ kelayituṃ (only occurrence of kela-; no v.l.) mamāyituṃ; Mv iii. 154.13 (mānuṣikāye) ca naṃ kelāyanāya kelāyantī, so Senart, taking kel° as ‘passive in sense’, (the girl) being tended (by the ṛṣi) with human care; but mss. kelāyanti, possibly for kelāyan ti (= iti), since he (the ṛṣi) was caring for her etc. (?); the mss. are corrupt in what follows, and the precise sense of the passage is doubtful; (4) cares for, cultivates, devotes oneself to (states of existence): Dbh 39.22 kelāyitāni mamāyitāni dhanāyitāni niketasthānāni (see s.v. niketa), tāni sarvāṇi vigatāni bhavanti sma; (5) attends to, prepares (by cooking): Mmk 81.26 mṛdvag- ninā pacet, su-kelāyitāṃ sukhoṣṇaṃ saindhava-cūrṇa- pūtāṃ kṛtvā…; (?) Mmk 708.28 śastram aṣṭaśatajaptaṃ kṛtvā chinditaḥ kailapayitvā (! read kelāpayitvā? ger. of caus., having caused to be cooked? object pāyasaṃ, line 26) hanet.
