From Arabic "rahj al-gahr", powder of the mine. Realgar (Arsenic monosulfide AsS) is known as a mineral pigment in Byzantium. Upon exposition to light the red realgar changes into yellowish-brown pararealgar. It also gives the yellow orpiment (ba bla) as alteration product (mindat.org).
The indian name Manaḥśilā denotes Realgar and has three varieties : Śyāma (Śyāmikā), Rakta (Kaṇavīrā) and Khaṇḍikā (wisdomlib.org).
