The 8 "qualities" of medicinal substances : lci (heavy), snum (oily), bsil (cool), rtul (blunt), yang (light), rtsub (coarse), tsha (hot) and rno (sharp). Further criteria are the 3 "natures" (ngo bo), 6 "tastes" (ro) and 17 "secondary qualities" (yon tan).
It recalls the old term 'virtue' of the medieaval herbals ('virtus' : value, power, potency, strength)
