lizard [JV]

(med) Mountain or Stream salamander (Batrachuperus sp) (Drungtso 1999, Yeshi 2017). Synonyms : gangs sbal pho (Jam-dpal), dwa byid (Drungtso 1999), da byid smug po, gang sbal (Yeshi 2017)

Illustrations : 'Phrin Las 1987 (30_039) da byid sha. Jam-dpal (pdf p 276) gangs sbal

The Medical Thangkas show a toad like species without tail, whereas Jam-dpal's illustration under the heading gangs sbal - where he gives da byid as a synonym - has a salamander-like animal. Quoting different sources, he discriminates a male pho sbal, or da byid, living in the snowy heights. And a female form which has the aspect of a toad, living down at the lakes. Of the da byid, it is in particular the purple or brown one which is considered superiour. da byid smug po is identified with Western Chinese mountain salamander, Batrachuperus pinchonii, of brown to olive colour. B. tibetanus is dark yellow. Drungtso translates da byid as 'male white snow frog', giving the scientific name Batrachuperus pinchonii. Johannes Schmidt (talk) 13:18, 15 February 2024 (EST)
