Agarwood, Eaglewood, Aloeswood or Calambac. The hebrew word 'Ahalot' of biblical times gave the trade name agallochum or aloeswood. The botanical genus Aquilaria is named after the portugese 'Aguila' (from tamil 'aghil'), with 3 species as major source for agarwood : Aquilaria malaccensis, A. crassna and A. sinensis. Species from other genera are secondary sources. Naturally the wood is of pale colour and odorless. Only after a fungal attack due to an injury, the tree produces a resin in response. The wood becomes heavy (it sinks in water), darkens up to black and becomes very aromatic. The resin is called aloes or calambac.
