Thread-cross (mdos)

  • A wooden frame (nam mkha') around which coloured threads (rgyang bu) are bound and feathers attached. This contraption is utilised in rituals designed for the catching and exorcising of evil spirits and negative forces. The structure assumes a different form, depending on the type of spirit or malevolent force, which is to be exorcised. For a detailed description of the various types of thread-cross, their preparation and efficacy, see Nebesky-Wojkowitz, Oracles and Demons of Tibet, pp. 369-397.
